    Nobel Economics Prize 2008 ?

Well of course first off it isn't exactly a Nobel Prize and it's name keeps changing. That aside who'll win right now is timely...

A front runner is Eugene Fama of the Efficient-market hypothesis (EMH) fame/infamy. Personally I think the EMH is nuts ... and it and other such nonsense bears a lot of the lame for our current crisis and in the current climate I think Richard Thaler or Robert Shiller ... Thaler especially so as he didn't share the prize with Kahneman in 2002. Given that they've tendency for perverse pairings Thaler/Fama would work well... though I'm not confident that either of them will win !

However if they want to go really outside the box they could at least cite Benoit Mandelbrot for his role in work in trying to slay the EMH beast... though that work was a little fuzzy on alternatives... or even further outside the box might be to give a citation to someone like Taleb but that would be nuts!

    Anyhow

    1) Whoever gets it now will have a unique opportunity to speak on the current crisis (if they so wish)
    2) Will they pick someone relevant to the current crisis, Time says they'll play it safe...

It would be a disgrace if either Roubini or Nassim Nicholas Taleb does not get it. Ideally, a joint prize between the two of them.

And, yeah, honourable nods in our own Kerrynorth's direction.

Youngdan too, but he might want to keep the 'Hilary Clinton is a bulldyke' stuff out of his acceptance speech.

Perhaps they should skip it this year. It'd be like awarding the physiology/medicine prize during the Black Death. Or the physics prize if the LHC had blown the world to pieces.

    lol!

I think they could award it to the economists who saw it coming and suggested correct policy. Perhaps politicians might start to listen to them in the future.
