Ireland has world's highest cost of living.

    Quality of Life Index 2008

International Living have once again chosen France as the best place in the world to live.

However, what is shocking for Ireland is not just being a worse place to live than Argentina, Uruguay, Portugal, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Mexico, Croatia, Romania etc.

It's our 0 score on cost of living.

We're the best in the world at yet another thing

ps. I think the list is very accurate.... I have lived in Germany, The USA and the UK and visited many of the countries. I agree with the UK's placing and ours. Although they may have underscored us on Culture and over scored us on infrastructure.

That chart is full of false technical promises and didn't interact very well

Always interesting to see, thanks for posting it. On the cost of living, unsurprising, but horrible all the same. I was reading a discussion between some economists today who suggested that we would have to follow the recent German experience and freeze wages for ten years if we are to have any chance of getting out of this position.

We came top of two rather vague categories, including "freedom".

Two of the categories we rank best on - i.e. are keeping our quality of life up - are Economy and Health ...

Our health scores poorly by west european standards.

Our economy would have been considered excellent until quite recently.. that section is probably based on GDP figures.

A wage freeze won't work here unless prices come down.

Some examples suited to a Saturday night which I may consume later...

    Taxi about 3km - Dublin €10-12, Berlin €6-7...
Long Neck Lager - Dublin €5-6 (in centre), Berlin €2.50-€3.00
    Mojito Cocktail - Dublin €15, Berlin €7
    Donor Kebab - Dublin €6-7, Berlin €2.40-€3.00

You can get 2 mojitos for €10 in Capitol Bar on Georges Street.

You can, however, spend €21 on breakfast in a Dublin hotel and it's not the Four Seasons.
    A poster of some consequence...
