Retail sales collapse in August: CSO

Down 6% in August. The worst figure in more than a quarter of a century. More later.

In many ways this is good news. People are paying off debt or saving.

What would the effect be of the appalling weather we had in August on retail spending?
There are times when you are simply required to be impolite. There are times when condescension is called for!

i dont think it'd be that much DS. I think were seeing the effects of all the stealth increases in living. electricity, gas, petrol, oil.

even though the last two will come down your average punter wont see it till next year.

    EDIT.

plus the unemployment figures started going through the roof around then didnt they? cant remember exactly but i know it was around 10k a month from march on average so by that stage your talking about 30k people on the dole. thats gotta hit spending, particularly if those people are thinking about christmas and whether theyre even gonna have one !

A couple of years ago I'd have thought DroghedaSouth was clutching at straws, but if you've seen the sector up close, Weather can indeed have an astonishing effect on retail spending.

It should help sales in some sectors anyway... I used to work in a Curry's and the weather in the morning was a reliable indicator of how busy it would be- if it was sunny the shop would be dead, and if it was grey/ a bit wet it'd be packed. The shop is in a retail park though, maybe people are more likely to shop on the streets when its sunny....
