    They should buy out Supervalu.

I think most people in this thread are hung-up on the "WalMart" part of the discussion when in fact, if for some strange reason ASDA decided to move south (which they won't) they would have no choice but to buy out an existing company with a moderate market share to have any kind of impact. They would enter under the ASDA brand and format, not the American format.

Dunnes would be a perfect choice although they will never sell.
Tesco obviously wouldn't, they are one of the largest retailers in the world.
That just leaves Supervalu which is a franchise therefore that's not an option (Musgraves doesn't own the stores, just the name) and Superquinn's market share is far too low for ASDA to have any kind of real impact on the market.

I'm sorry to put a downer on the topic but sorry Ireland, I sincerely doubt you'll get a ASDA/Wal-Mart at any point in the near future.

P.S. Asda is one of the worst employers in the UK. If they came to these shores, you'd be begging to work for Dunnes.

I was in Walmart just yesterday. I don't like the place and it's not that cheap. I don't think it would be much of an addition.

Walmart is pretty cheap for some things - for example cosmetics/cleaning products and some clothes (I got a fantastic Batman t-shirt for 11 bux which would have cost 40 elsewhere). Also things like school-bags, copy-books, pens, etc. If I had school-going children they would get their supplies at Walmart.

Some other stuff isn't especially cheap, just competitive.

And I agree - I don't like the place either

Although this thread was started in July of 2008, the moderators have allowed it to remain active which means there must be a Wal-Mart already set up in Ireland by now. Where are its stores and how many branches do they have? Just curious.

Walmart bought out Asda in UK 10 plus years ago and they have opened a couple of stores in NI.

At this point in time it is unlikely they will seek to buy out anybody in Ireland as there is no one for sale................this may of course change over time.

Walmart was in Germany but pulled out in 2006 due to competition.

I was in Walmart a last year with my wife looking to purchase a CD rack. My wife who is very slight in stature took a CD rack off the shelf only for the shelf to collapse sending an assortment of products all over the ground and nearly injuring my wife. The area of the shop this happened in was right beside the staff break room and three members of staff walked right passed the scene of the incident without even hesitating.

I don't blame the staff for not giving a crap because obviously if they would just walk past an incident like that they are obviously so demoralized due to enforced unpaid overtime ect. We have our benchmark bad employer in Ryanair we do not need another. If Walmart was to come we could see them competing with Ryanair as to who can shaft their staff the worst.

Not in my Ireland and I will never darken the door of another Walmart in America (I do spend a lot of time there)
