The volume of retail sales fell -4.8% in May from May 07. They also fell -1.1% in volume from April. It should be noted that -4.8% May fall is exceptional because of the SSIA effect in May 07 when retail sales rose 9.5%.
However, the trend is unmistakeable as yoy retail sales has fallen further and further every month this year. From January-May retail sales have been: 1.9%, -0.1%, -2%, -3.4%, -4.8%. The volume of retail sales in May at 116.9 is back to 2006 levels.
