Cutbacks: 400 million this year 1,000 million next year

Mr Lenihan told a press conference in Government Buildings that the cutbacks would seek to save €400 million this year, and €1 billion next year.

Ministerial pay rises, as well as rises for senior public servants and judges, will be suspended until 2010 and a reduction of 3 per cent in payroll costs will be sought in Government departments, State agencies and local authorities, Mr Lenihan said.

Surplus staff in the Health Service Executive will also be dealt with.

The Government’s decentralisation programme will be examined and the Government will seek to reduce the costs of tribunals of inquiry both this year and next.
There will be a re-evaluation of capital projects with only 'core economic infrastructure' getting the go-ahead from Government for a spendfest.
