Atlantic, therein lies the problem, you assume everything fits into your interpretation of what the Public and Private sector represents. I have worked in both, there was no cut-throat do or die, get knifed or whatever else you ascribe to your dreamworld view of the Private sector. I have worked in the private sector and it is riddled with lazy, incompetent arseholes who think they are being entrepreneurial and are inherently better than their public sector counter parts simply by turning up to work. There is a myth being peddled here that the private sector inherently weeds out all those who are incompetent, there is a myth being peddled here that the mechanics of the private sector fine tunes and hones every single employee into the most competent and efficient employee he/she could possibly be. There is a myth that the market kills off anyone that cannot deliver exceptional standards all the time every time. It is this myth that people like you are hiding behind. You have allowed this warped and quite frankly ******** belief to place you on a pedestal where you think you can preach the virtues of the private sector to all unchallenged. You need to get a grip. You are casually attacking the public sector by taring every single worker in it with the same brush and by erroneously juxtaposing them to an imaginary private sector where you believe every single worker is in perpetual fear for their jobs least they work their fingers to the bone, constantly bow to each and every demand made by management (for the good of the company/nation- insert cliche here) and accept exploitation as a fact of life. You view all in the public sector as lazy, greedy, incompetent, resistant to change and in need of your unique insights and determinations in order to become productive, valuable and efficient workers. Worst of all, you expect anyone in the public sector to take you seriously.

As for hacking it the private sector? Please! More mythological ill-informed drivel. I can hack it anywhere I choose. I have worked in both and found neither unbearable in terms of pressure and commitment. Is it your view that people are not actually working unless they are teetering on or around burnout at all times? Don't make me laugh. No one subscribes to this Victorian Darwinist work ethic and if they do they need to taken somewhere far away and thrown down a very deep hole.

Talks are proceeding in relation to a new national wage agreement.(Which wont take effect until 2016) The Government has stated their position as have the Unions, a compromise will be reached and voted on and the best deal for all will be accepted. You snapping at the processes heels from the side lines with your inveterate hyperbole and tired old platitudes is irrelevant.

The Public sector is in metamorphoses, the Government knows this, is is constantly kept up to date with reform made through PMDS and structural reviews. It is in a better position that you to view the public sector as having accepted the challenges placed before it and moving with Government in overcoming them. Government itself has been more of a bloody hindrance in this process by introducing politically motivated initiatives and placing politically motivated demands on crucial sectors. It has placed embargoes in all the wrong areas and recruited a whole layer of unnecessary bean counters and pencil pushers by slavishly following a US business model which places cost saving at the apex of reform. This is actually at odds which efficiency models in the long run as quick fix short term penny pinching replaces long term strategic investment.

You and SBS mouthing off soundbyte rhetoric is of no consequence in this regard. This is a position you have effectively placed yourself with your own ranting.
What you have written is spot on. I have worked in both sectors-Bamking (private) and teaching. Firstly comparing the two is hard to do for obvious reasons. Would you really want a school that is only focused on results and would not have any time for weaker kids? In the Bank I came across Managers who had blown millions of the Banks money and were still employed. I dont have to justify my existence every year but I dont go around looking for money for doing extra curricular activity because I have a holistic view of education. We have unemployment of only 7%. fULL employment starts at 4%. Lets get a grip!
