Public / private partnerships and the port tunnel

In view of the ongoing problems, with the tunnel closing so often, is it time to have a rethink on the whole concept of these arrangements ?

Jesus no, you'll give DaveM a seizure for suggesting such, they are the zenith of contractual mechanics and deliver the most efficient outcomes and corners are never ever cut.

I think PPP's should be renamed PPPPP's: Public Pay Perenially for Private Profit!

Given the fact that PD/FF policies have ensured that the one and only boom modern has ever had has been pissed down the drain, there may be some reason for PPP's in the future, but in our recent past there is no excuse for this blatant waste.

the problem is that the public sector cant do anything right cos of imcompetent leadership right from the very top.

using the private sector for such projects opens the possibility of bribes etc.

Which State body did you forsee having the competence to engage in what was the largest civil engineering project in Europe at the time of its construction?

The port tunnel would still in a period of defects liability and contractor would still have to have a performance bond in place. If there are deficiencies in the work carried out by the contractor then any remedial works will be at his cost. What's the problem with that?

Leftfemme I'd hazard a guess that we're unlikely ever to see eye to eye on PPP's but I think it's fair to say that the kind of disasters we saw in the pre-PPP era have not been replicated in PPP infrastructural projects. Isn't that a good thing?

I don't see what's wrong with the tunnel. How does it compare with other European tunnels in terms of downtime?

none, and seeing as we pay for the state bodies we should just reform the whole lot of them, thats the solution.

Is that some sort of defence? The yoke is only open a wet day and there are already some pretty serious problems. If it goes dow the city id gridlocked. Explain that and we will look into comparing it to other tunnels later!

this is related to harneys crusade to make health into a business.

the reason given for the building of the hospitals is that the public precurement process will take to long etc, the solutiuon then is to change this process.
