FG's continued discrimination against women of pension age who left the workforce for a period of time - usually to raise their family - is going to bite it in the arse

Correct whatever mistakes were made. I read some article today that some person was hammered by having done part time work in the 60s or 70s.

Mary Walsh gets a reduced State pension due to the rule change that came into effect five years ago and she is angry about the situation.
She worked outside her home for more than 20 years as well as taking time out to rear five children.
Her pension has been reduced by €35 a week due to the cut.

"If I had drawn the dole for all the years I was in the workforce, I would get a full pension, but I tried my best and I am losing out," she said.

The PRSI system is complicated, its an insurance scheme with payments based on contributions. Another way of looking at it - should someone who works in Saudi Arabia for 20 years, contributing nothing, be entitled to the same pension as someone who paid PRSI for 40 years?

    Here's one idiot anyway.

However I would point out that were I, and every other idiot, to stop smoking tomorrow the tax burden on each and every occupied home in Ireland would need to rise by 1,200 (annually) immediately to replace lost revenues.

Idiots, or considering smokers die younger - thus saving the state monies at the other end, patriots?

In Ireland you either earn 30k+ or otherwise walk the social welfare career path. Working for 15-30k while thinking about rising family is a symptom of poor calculation.

    This is the anomaly.

Never work and get paid for it.

    Never work and get housed.

Never work and get free house repairs.

Never work and get a full pension.

Work and get ....................... a REDUCED pension.

Problem with that is that Mary would not have been able to draw the dole for twenty years as it is means tested so her husband's income would have been taken into account.

It is galling though that the non-contributory pension is often more than Mary's reduced pension, despite her working and paying towards it for twenty years.
