Sharp fall in December construction activity

The Ulster Bank PMI for December shows a sharp contraction to 35.7 (less than 50 indicates contraction), the lowest since records were kept. The biggest was in residential but the most surprising aspect was the sharp fall in both commercial and infrastructure as well although there has been notable weakness in commercial for some months now. Commercial activity fell at its fastest in 4.5 years. The index also indicates a quickening pace of redundancies.

Well lets hope this government reaps the rewards it sowed, by making this country reliant on the construction industry to keep it going over the last number of years, very little foresight on their part, and we may pay for that lack of planning for a few years to come yet.
