How much is the Irish success-story based on the EU?

How much do you think the current economic boom of Ireland is because of the EU? No-one is claiming that none of it would have happened without the EU but how much really?

Are there any facts and figures as to how much Ireland has benefited from the EU?

Depends on when you posed the question.

Had you posed it five years, ten years, 15 years or even 20 years after we joined the reply would have been "What success story?"

So any direct linkage between a current "success story" (if it exists) and the Eu seems quite tenuous.

Remember Albert Reynolds coming home from Brussells waving a peice of paper say, "8 billion pound; we're in the money..."

    EU Structural funding.
    EU Regional Funding.
    EU Periphery Funding.

We were only short of sending a thank you letter to Herr Kohl and Mr Mitterand.

There has been a significant benefit to Ireland from its membership of the EU. However, you are unlikely to find precise 'facts and figures' owing to the fact that the benefit is virtually unquantifiable. The various grants to Ireland in order to improve the infrastructure of the state have been paramount in attracting more companies into the state which has in turn bolstered the economy. There is also an argument to make that with the advent of the EMU, Ireland was in a position to ignore any moral hazard which posed threats to the economy and thus take greater economic risks in the knowledge that it was relatively protected within a much larger trading bloc.

What natural resources are generating all the money that fuels (pun) the Celtic tiger.

its all American and EEC money to neutralize the effects of the North, come the end of Irish Nationalism and the money will all dry up, they didn't want a Cuba on their doorstep thats all.

Or perhaps I'm wrong and Westlife,/Boyzone and Bono created all the wealth.

What a stupid question - Surely you know that the only cause of the Irish success was Bertie Ahern......

What about all that Gas we signed away??? - A reserve now known to be worth billions!

Fishing & farming industries in this country have been hit incredibly hard as a result of EU regulation!

Properly run I believe this country could have gone the same route as Norway, but then again it has its benefits!
Consider it rude, the support of economic sovereignty for which your German masters have no say.

Is this your declaration that we would be better off out of the EU, but at the same time we would be better off remaining in it?

Well gas signed away for money when we had no capability to bring it in..

Fishing industry that ensured that even with EU restrictions has nearly fished us out...

Farming industry that only survived with EU subsidies...
