Big rise in unemployment and sharp fall in construction

Unemployment claimants rose by 5000 in November to 169k. The annual increase has jumped sharply in one month from 6pc in October to 8.9pc in November yoy as 13k more sign on than in November 06. Also there is a steep fall in construction employment from -3.3pc yoy in September to -4.9pc yoy in October. A fall of 1.6pc in one month or circa 4000 jobs even after allowing for seasonality.

This is a worrying statistic. I have consistantly maintained that so long as employment was created then the economy could weather any storm.

The big test will be over the next few months when we will see if our economy can create jobs for these newly unemployed.

I feel that Brian Cowan may come under pressure to cut PRSI (EE and ER).
That 10.75% Employerrs PRSI is a b1tch of a bill to have to pay. A cut to this could see a rise in employment as the extra funds it relaease could be channelled towards taking on an extra worker.

We've been here before and we know what works.

Cut the tax on work, Mr Cowan.....

but what work is there for them to do? Service industry? 4,000 a month is a lot of new tesco and supermacs job creation.
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

Jobs in the "breakfast roll" sector will be going too with fewer employed builders to buy them. The Celtic Tiger hangover is about to begin.
The only silver lining is that Fianna Fail are still in office to reap what they've sown over the last decade

A job is a job is a job.
Jeez, you guys are choosy. Anyway heavy labour does not exist only in the building industry. Drivers with full clean licences are always in demand. Removals work, transport and warehousing plus there is always the option of going out on your own building extensions, converting attics and the like.
