    Huge investment for Carlow

US Pharmaceutical company Merck has bought the dormant Technology Park in Carlow, and is set to invest €200,000,000 into a plant there. The operations will be fully functional by 2011 and will employ circa 200 people, from admin jobs to "highly skilled" workers.

Excellent news for Carlow, and indeed the SE region in general.

4 more years, 4 more years, 4 more years. That's how long they wait for these jobs will be.

    You muppet.

Still we should be seeing the end of negative equity in the house market in commuter towns like Carlow around this time.

high tech pharmaceutical operations are bloody expensive to setup almost regardless of where you do it, the costs are in the equipment and the process's and far less in the staff (in general if you average total salary over total headcount), thus setting up a pharmaceutical operation with 200 people costs well over 25 times setting up a call centre with 2000 people.

If its costing 200 million euros to build and equip, there will probably be lots of construction jobs long before 2011.

And FINCAD is basing its European sales and services centre here in Ireland in Blackrock. This will create a further 30 jobs and no doubt lead to even further building jobs while the place is set up.

A very good day on the jobs front, especially considering the 100 jobs in prospect at Data Electronics in Dublin, as reported by today's Irish Times. More building jobs will flow from this, too.

As well as the actual jobs announced here, there is a multiplier effect. These newly-employed will creare extra jobs simply by spending their pay packets. We're looking at about 1,500 jobs created today alone between the actual companies mentioned, builders and the multipliers of both of these factors.
