"The latest data from the Department of Social Protection indicate that 10,624 young people under 26 have been on the Live Register for one year or more. This figure is still far too high and more needs to be done," James Doorley, NYCI deputy director said.

A new Youth Employment Support Scheme (YESS) to be introduced early 2018 - targeted at young jobseekers who are long-term unemployed or who face barriers to employment - has also been welcomed.
"With more jobs becoming available there is a great opportunity to assist this cohort of young people to transition back into the labour market, but that can only be achieved with the full and committed implementation of the scheme," said Mr Doorley.

Construction activity increased sharply in November as new orders and employment rose at strong rates.

The Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 56.7 in November, up from 54.5 in October and the fastest rise in activity in five months.

The seasonally adjusted index - designed to track changes in total construction activity - has now shown growth for 51 months in a row.

For the second month in a row, the housing sector was the best performing of those covered by the survey.

The National Competitiveness Council has warned of the negative consequences of the scarcity and high cost of accommodation for the economy.

The accommodation issue impacts the country's attractiveness for mobile investment and talent, the Council said.

Given the urgency and scale of the challenge and the complexity of the housing market, it is important that interventions by the state are not pursued in a piecemeal fashion, it urged.

In a report on the Competitiveness Challenge, the NCC called for a determined effort from Government, enterprise and trade unions to ensure wage levels do not move in a manner that outstrips growth in productivity.
