No, it's not, 37,741 of our compatriots died in 1950, in a population far lower than today. The line has been firmly downwards ever since.

12.7 out of every 1,000 died in 1950, compared to a far lower 6.5 in 2006. Approximately 45,400 would have had to die last year for it to be comparable. It's one of the wonders of modern Ireland, that our death rate, both in absolute and relative terms, declines.
Common sense has no place in the world of sensational statistics! Begone Ard Taoiseach!

It also means that around 2150 no people in Ireland will die at all. This is great news.

Rapscallion, my previous contract ended two months ago. I took a month off as a break and then started looking. It took longer than expected and got a bit hairy in the last few weeks but I was being quite choosy with what I wanted. But today I'm signing a contract and starting in December. I've had several call backs since I was offered the job I'm taking too.
    So it's not all bad.

Now mark one off the job losses list and smile.
    A poster of some consequence...

As well as the 150 jobs gone in Bulmers today the Kerry Group are cutting 50 from Dennys in Tralee.
