Here in Derry, if you hold a shop door open for a nice lady, you will generally get a smile.

Can the same be said of Dublin?
Yes, it can, and we're more ecumenical in our door-holdings. We hold open doors for all sorts of people.

I worry about you sometimes. I really do.

I've oft hear people moaning about how rude and horrible the people in shops or people in general are in this country.
It leaves me wondering if I'm living in a different country. While I don't always get service with a smile I could count on one hand the times I've been subject to people being rude. And when that does happen they regret it afterwards!
I think the survey, it tells the truth.
I have to agree with you there Cookiemonster. I usually get service with a smile, whether its in a shop, restaurant, hotel or pub - of course I always try to be polite and smile, goes a long way, especially if someone is overworked and obviously stressed, the last thing needed is a grumpy, miserable person moaning at them.

Without trying to sound like a happy clappy moron - smile, it works!
If I could mass-sterilise the planet, I would. Seriously.

With the possible exception of Ard-Taoiseach.

What are you getting at? Come on, say it out straight, I dare you.

I'll have you know both types of people mingle very well in Derry, Dohertys and McLaughlins.

I meant we hold doors open for everyone. Honestly, I completely forgot about the Catholic/Protestant division that has run through Derry in the past. Apologies for any offence caused.

I use the LP Thorntree and provide answers to questions from people looking to visit Ireland and the UK.

Based on the other Irish people who are on and being helpful we would be seen in quite a good light where as prob 40% of the Brits are just total ******************************************s.

They have a Sport section which resembles a fight in a pub most of the time with English & Aussies having big chips on the shoulders. Can be quite good fun getting people to make fools of themselves as some do it so well.

It seems to me that the people who do all the moaning are focusing on the bad service (which in my view is very rare) and never on the good. They're probably the scorpy gits who expect to be treated like royalty without giving anything in return.

Like you say, a smile and some patience go a long way to getting you good service.

I am very friendly to tourists.

Particularly Nordic female tourists between the age of 21 and 30.
