More job losses on the way?

Boston Scientific expected to cut between 7% and 12% of its global workforce. Considering their presence in Ireland, that would likely leave a portion of them here.

Does anyone know where the five plants are in Ireland? I only know of three - Cork, Galway and Tullamore.

N.B. This is not a knocking of government economic policy. In fact, there's no evidence yet that there will be any losses in Ireland. It's just drawing attention to possible future job losses and how global events may impact on us.

It seems from that article that the job losses could be focused on the stent business which is mainly based in the US. (Do Boston Scientific make stents in Ireland?)
(some analyst) said he thought the cuts would affect about 7 percent of Boston Scientific's overall workforce, though it would probably hit the company's ailing stent business harder.

It's a possibilty, but we've been down this road before. One job loss doesn't wreck our economy. I would imagine the impact here to be half to two-thirds of the global one, if there is to be one.

Jobs get lost and created all the time.

Think they make stents in Galway anyway - not sure about the other plants

Boston bought Guidant a few years back so now own Guidant's Clonmel plant. I think that they have a facility in Letterkenny but not sure.

By the way it's all nice and well for AT (the uber - optimist) to dismiss this with talk of the economy can take a hit and sure it's ok as we have a dynamic labour market but over 3000 people work in Boston Scientific Galway alone. The mainstay of its business is in the manufacture of stents, the area that the article seems to suggest that is under pressure. Therefore Galway could get hit very hard by these cuts.

3000 Boston employees is a large percentage of the total labour force in Galway. I'm sure any workers (and I know quite a few) affected by this and the general economy of Galway will not treat it as blaise as AT and his sort. These jobs may not mean a bean to him but to Galway in general and workers that may be affected by this, it is their livelihoods at stake and could be a bodyblow to the local Galway economy.

I realise that AT is a FF propagandist but please take off the rose tinted glasses and realise that it is real people involved. People with mortgages and that have roots in the area. How dynamic are people who have a house and and kids settled in a school. Also there are many local companies that depend on Boston for business.

Yes, for Americans that is. Let's hope they'll get replacement jobs.
