Eircom coming back to Ireland - a threat to real Broadband?

    http://www.siliconrepublic.com/news/new ... single8935

The Australian private equity bankers Babcock and Brown who own our copper network i.e. Eircom, are making gestures about selling a chunk of it back to us but in return for a stake in our MANS ('metropolitan area networks' which the govt have been building lately and are currently nearing completion of the Shannon region MAN which stretches from Offaly to West Clare with Limerick as a main hub).

Twisted pair Babcock and Brown: do they now fear that Eircom will have to compete with this second (fibre) broadband network making Eircom less of a cash-cow and more of a real business which they will have to invest in just to stay afloat, or is this news about a legitimate corporate deal?

We are ninth in Europe for quality BB delivery and up to now we have had a monopoly running whatever BB we have - a monopoly which has no incentive to provide more plus we have a useless toothless yoke called ComReg sucking more funds from us. Now that monopoly wants to move in on the competition.

That's a really bad joke of a situation - unshield them we must.
