Second large monthly jump in Unemployment

The July live register is up 8230 to 174593 - another 3 year high like last months. The sesonally adjusted figure is also up 800 to 163000. However, there is another interesting story within the seasonally adjusted figures. Female unemployment fell 300 whereas male unemployment rose 1100 - undoubtably reflecting what is starting to occur in the construction industry!

Just because it's not as good as it has been over the past few years does not mean it's trounced just yet.

Kerrynorth said that this was the second large monthly jump. Might this have somthing to do with the new government partners?

This is a wild exaggeration. Unemployment is up 5,500 this July compared with July 2006, an increase of around 3.5%. However, the labour force is growing by about 4% a year. So, the unemployment RATE this July is virtually unchanged from a year ago. Likewise with the monthly increase. Because of the increasing Labour Force, the actual number unemployed would need to rise by about 600 per month for the unemployment RATE to stay constant. In July it rose 800. So, there was a very slight increase in the unemployment RATE that month. The overall trend is that the unemployment RATE is now rising, but only very slightly. And, of course, we don't know how much of that slight increase is due to the very bad weather. I'd certainly have expected 50 consecutive days of rain to have had some effect on employment in the building industry and the tourist industry.

Before you go making an eejit of yourself go and look at the figures again on www.cso.ie . You will see that the figures I quoted are the month on month figures, July over June, I never said anytime about year on year figures. The monthly figures better reflect the onging trend of the here and now not last year.

I addressed the monthly increase in the second half of my post. After allowing for population and labour force growth, the seasonally adjusted increase in July is only a couple of hundred. That's a small increase, not a large increase.
