Biggest indicator of an economic downturn yet.........

Has to be the fall in attendance at the Galway Races. The attendance for the last 2 days has been lower than last year with Plate day (yesterday), the 2nd biggest day, down a full 3000 at 25500. An indicator of the fall off in the fortunes of the construction and property development sectors, or, maybe the farmers just taking advantage of the weather?

I don't why these naysayers aren't pushing up daisies at this point.
That's complete nonsense. I disagree with you.

Evening attendances are up - but Day down maybe something to do with people afraid to call in sick risk losing job and have no hope of employment
Probably more to do with fewer people holidaying at home due to crap weather - who wants to get there stiletto's went, and running hair dye can ruin an outfit

Why the Galway Races? Why not Oxegen or The Derby at the Curragh a few weeks ago?

Regarding the racing industry, unless things have changed dramaticlly since I left the industry, things have never been better. If you do believe me go ask Ivan Yeates!

Owing to the numbers involved, the cost and the logistics of getting to the galway races there is serious planning involved. I'd say the bad weather has more to do with it than anything to do with the economy. Have a look at the amount of money oassing through the bookies both on and off course. That'll tell you much more than attendance figures.

The reduced attendances are as a result of mass suicides this nation has seen recently of economy-sceptics*. Who would have thought Galway was historically such a mecca for Bears?

    *See also 'FF-Bullsh1t' sceptics.

50 days of rain means the country is empty (my commute time is 60% shorter) and the rain makes reading horses form difficult, so it's hell for punters

you can always talk yourself into a recession you know....
