    July exchequer returns

Are due later this afternoon. Both income and spending figures will be interesting. To what extent will the severe building slowdown make itself felt in income tax and VAT returns with a 60pc fall in June starts. Further falls in property taxes and the impact of the weather on VAT returns. On the expenditure side will we see an appreciable fall in spending growth now the election is out of the way?

Revenue is back on target, just E16million below profile. Capital taxes (including Stamp Duty) and Excise duty are substantially below profile. But Income and Corporation Tax as well as VAT had a good month to bring up the overall figures.

On the spending side there is an overspend of close to E400million. Health and Transport look to be the culprits!
