    The half cent

Iam going to purue a cause for the introduction of a half cent or even a quarter cent
This would be most beneficial in the caseof say a price increase from the ESB wherby the cost can be incresed marginally and does not result in massive monies going into such bodies when all they require is a modest increse in revenue at time

I think that politicians should act now and saying that Brssells approval or that no one else has the smaller currency is no excuse

Not quite as good as the well-established Monster Raving Loony Party policy of 99p coins. Must try harder.

Surely melting down the mint would yield a higher return?

On a somewhat related note, Australia did away with the 1c and 2c coins a few years ago. Prices remained the same, and rounding occurs (and is shown on your receipt) whenever a purchase is made.

No price changes occured, but the price of 98 cent for a tin of beans is in fact a dollar when you get to the till, so in reality prices did change.
I asked someone once why they just didnt round up on the price tag instead of waiting to get to the till, but for big purchaes it makes a difference, which is fair enough.

Sweden had this done as far back as 1996. I think they got rid of coins up to 10c, but still had prices in 1, 2 and 5c denominations. Your bill was rounded up or down to the nearest 10c at the till
