    The Germans - Mc Williams

    clic on link

David McWilliams » Let’s talk about Germany.

great description for the ordinary clown, who wants to know what Germany are up to

its very apt and funny too

here is a quote from the article

So what do the Germans want? They want a federal Europe with a weakish euro and no political or financial shocks coming from some of its unruly peripheral neighbours.

What is the obstacle to attaining this?

Well, Germany is like the good, house-proud neighbour in a bad area. The rest of peripheral Europe are the bad neighbours. France is the neighbour that copies the German lead, trying to match the Germans in terms of their hanging baskets and their freshly-swept drive. If you’ve ever had a neighbour who copies your home improvements, you know how annoying this can be. But at least this neighbour doesn’t bring down the tone of the area.

Unlike Germany’s lawn, which is pristine, peripheral European neighbours live in houses that have plywood on broken windows, and their lawns are full of weeds, overgrown and tatty. The paint is peeling off the neighbours’ porches and the slates have not been fixed. Unlike some of the neighbours, the German house is the picture of order, symmetry and solidity. But the problem for the Germans is that the value of their house is more dependent on the state of the rest of the houses on the estate than on the quality of their own manicured hedge.

As the estate worsens and becomes more and more anti-social, hoodies-up, menacing-the-old-people, the value of German’s property plummets. So the Germans have a massive personal interest in cleaning up the neighbourhood. They will pay to have the other houses tarted up, to get the delinquent kids off the street and for the neighbours generally to act a bit more like them.
In the past, the Germans could at least enlist the support of the French in their efforts to clean up the area. But now, even the French are threatening to go rogue. The Germans fear that it is only a matter of time before the French put an old Renault up on blocks and leave it on the driveway.

David McWilliams is one of Ireland’s leading economic commentators. He was the first economist to see that the Irish boom was nothing more than a credit bubble and one of the very few to accurately predict it would all end in a monumental crash with bank failures, negative equity and rising unemployment and emigration.

do posters think mcwilliams view of Germany is correct, and if not what is their view of what the germans are up to ?

    my view is this

According to the Bank for International Settlements, total lending of non-Irish banks to Irish banks is around $170bn, of which British banks provided $42bn, German banks provided $46bn, US banks $25bn and French banks $21bn.

    quote from bokuden

We need to point out that EVERYONE is responsible for the crisis, not just the feckless mediterraneans. The Germans have played a major role and they need to face up to this.

"Germany wants to do with banks what it couldn’t – historically – do with tanks."

And Enda Kenny, Michael Noonan, Eamon Gilmore and Micheal Martin are German agents dropped behind enemy lines to cripple the enemy from within.

No they just believe in the EU very strongly, the problem comes when they think that should mean having an unquestioning mentality towards it [along with the weird notion that has taken over lately of treating the Germans like they are in charge of it,everyone seems to have bought into this blindly over the last 2 years with no basis for it], and that attitude will ironically be the death of the EU if it keeps up, because people will begin to see it more and more as a bad thing than a good thing and start to want out of it.

The weird Germany worship thats taken over the political hacks in this country is really strange, especially since it seems to be mostly based on pure fiction [that the Germans were always fiscally prudent and if only we'd done what they did we'd not have had a crash...]

Listening to the token German that they wheel out on VB and the Frontline talking about how some of her neighbours paid for the road outside their house to be recobbled even though they didn't want it done due to the noise of the cobbles over tarmacadam but paid the local council a couple of grand each anyway, reminded me why their blind obedience to authority is so dangerous....

Personally i don't trust them one iota and thats why i'm voting no........

What scared me about that story was that everyone seemed to applaud that bizarre and nonsensical policy, paying for a modification to the pathway outside your residence SEPARATELY instead of through your taxes is odd enough, but having to do it even when you didn't want the modification is even more ridiculous, but there they were applauding it.

This is what I've been saying for a while now, this bizzare GErmany worship has taken over a lot of peoples heads in this country but its not really based on anything other than this cartoonish fiction , this idea people have in their heads of GErmans as really efficient and prudent and logical.
If you look at their actual economic policies over the last 15 years they made the exact same mistakes in terms of financial deregulation that we did , and were running budget deficit after budget deficit even in good times* [a bad thing, imo, you should only be running them in bad times] and have a much much more comprehensive social welfare system than we do [a good thing, imo[, yet to listen to the people on this site you'd swear they always balanced their books and gave people food stamps instead of welfare.

Have you also noticed we have to copy everything Germany is PERCEIVED to be doing [balanced budgets] but is not actually doing, yet were not being pushed to adopt thing they're ACTUALLY doing like a staggard high standard welfare system that starts off very generous and a universal health and education system? Oh no we only copy the cartoon stereotype of the Germans being all austerity worshiping, except thats not what they do!!
As usual those annoying things called facts are just missing in this debate.

*incidentally this is another huge lie in this debate, that they did everything right the last decade and we did wrong, they were the ones who didn't balance their books in the good times not us, we always balanced ours and only went into the red when we had a recession, what was their excuse?
