Jaysus this is hard work. I should never have asked.
The most recent tax-inclusive prices I could find are here via SEAI and they date from December 2010.
See Table 19 Page 23, (Business electricity prices in IE band is the last table with full statistics).

    http://www.seai.ie/Publications/Stat...lectricity.pdf

From my read, it shows the Irish prices, including taxes, Dec 2010, were 84.1% of the EU average (9th cheapest). In June 2010 prices in the IF band were 67.8% of the EU average (4th cheapest).
    Someone else have a go.

    Doodah,

Its about as complicated as it possible to get and anyone who tells you different is either a fool or a liar, for example it is possible to get a domestic kw/hr rate in France as low as 10c but go one watt above your agreed consumption and you need a second mortgage to pay your next bill, in Germany a percentage of your electricity bill is ringfenced as a contribution to your old age pension.

Microsoft to expand Dublin data centre - The Irish Times - Thu, Feb 23, 2012

Microsoft has confirmed plans to expand its "mega data centre" in Dublin, investing an additional $130 million in the facility.

The Dublin-based data centre, which began operation in 2009 with an initial investment of $500 million, will grow to 415,000 sq ft and 29.4 megawatts of power. Initially, the centre was 303,000 sq ft.
    ....
Although the data centre itself won't directly create a large number of new jobs - the expanded centre will employ between 50 and 70 people in total - it is expected to create 400 construction jobs over the next 12 months.

    Doodah,

You previously asked about electricity prices, that is a complex area, but I bolded a sentence in your quote above and add a sentence from the Microsoft statement.

Our expanded facility will be 50 percent more efficient than traditional data centres, and will use renewable wind energy when available.
The reason that companies both large and small want to use renewable electricity is that the price is stable over time, its a hedge against the increasing price of fossil fuels and the availability of renewable energy is a powerful tool in containing costs in energy hungry industries.

Tier 1 fibre is now beginning to come ashore in the west of Ireland and along with the both the climate and local availability of renewables, the west of Ireland will be a global class location for these data centres, a rapidly growing industry for the next 20 years at least, and their associated R&D.

The only factor holding up this process now is that the electricity grid is very weak in the west.

    From the IDA link:

The data centre makes extensive use of outside air economization to cool the facility year round, resulting in greater power efficiency with a resultant reduction in carbon footprint and an annual Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) average of 1.25 across the entire facility during peak usage hours. Projected to be 50 percent more efficient than traditionally built facilities, it uses only 1 percent of the water used by other similarly sized data centres in the industry. With a strong focus on sustainability, approximately 99 percent of all waste at the facility is recycled, including packaging, pallets, crates, and cabling.
These data centres appear to be setting the standards for energy efficiency.

Yep, but they still gobble up huge amounts of electricity, 25MW is approx 10,000 times the power requirement of the average Irish home.

Hence Ireland's attractiveness for these facilities.

    It is terrible news somehow.

    My suggestions are as follows...

    They are crap jobs
They are only here for the grants and will leave in 4 years
They are only taking on 250 people this year and another 750 over the next four years. Dis-fupping-aster!
They are jobs for the furringers!
    They are too specialised
    They are not specialised enough
    They only pay 12.5% tax
They are going to result in power cuts
They are going to make things better and I won't have anything to complain about
