It should be noted that the iPhone 4S costs roughly $200 to build. The $8 refers to assembly costs.

That article is bullsh!t. The iPhone is designed by Apple engineers in Cupertino California. They employ over 43,000 high paid staff there. The jobs outsourced to China are low value by comparison. There was a discussion of this subject on Marian Finuncane yesterday. This talk of slavery and such is way off the mark. The people employed in these factories are by and large, happy with their lot. Comparing pay rates with the US is ridiculous though.

It will not be too far off when assembly and manufacture requires no employees at all.

True. Which just goes to show that there are plenty of idiots with money out there. Scamming them is easier than a real job. So now you know what to do with your life.

Nobody's successfully exploited that flaw in Apples trendy right-on image yet. This is probably because their competitor companies probably do exactly the same as them. In fact it might be impossible to run companies profitably with products at a price which the customer will buy and have money left over for future R&D in the tech industry without using cheap labor from places such as China.

That's why they commit suicide and protest I suppose.

I'm reading Steve Jobs biography at the moment, only got as far as the first Apple computers in the mid to late 70s. Steve Jobs was a driven individual who had some serious character faults but he was a visionary. Without him the world of the PC would have developed very differently. It is the ability to see things differently that distinguishes the exceptional person from the ordinary and there is no doubt Jobs was exceptional.

Some interesting points here. African farmers benefit from having a fair trade logo on certain food products. Battery hens benefit from having "free range" printed on chicken products. Surely there should be a "made in the free world" sticker also. People would still be free to buy whatever they wanted.
