    income distribution

Is there any (government?) website with information on the income distribution in the country ?

    For example:

    Total workforce: 1234567 people

    0-5000: 21,123 people
    5001-10000: 35,111 people
    10001 - 15000: xxxx people
    and so on

I has a look at the CSO website and they seem to only publishes averages. I assume the above table would give the standard gaussian curve.

Well there are lots of people living on less than the dole. Asylum seekers to begin with.

I thought the post was referring to working people.

I'm curious as to why that figure was put in, that's all.

Well, I was thinking of people working part time. (perhaps students)

You won't get population level figures, as they're not collected. That data will be in some household surveys (with associated confidence intervals), but may not be published in the bands you want. The most up to date household survey containing income data (note: not earnings - it includes government transfers) is the EU-SILC. This

has some information on income deciles. hth.

How can it not be collected ? I mean, surely the government needs to have a record of what everyone in the country earns in order to determine income tax ? Is it just not combined into a single document.

Thanks for the link, but I don't think it shows the income distribution.

The Revenue would have that, not the CSO. The problem with Revenue figures is that they're based on declared income (so self-employed income underreporting a problem), and includes income from all sources, so any rental income would be included with labour market earnings. This link

    has Revenue stuff.

Previous link does have information on income distribution - look at Tables 13 and 14. The headers on these tables give the income deciles.

Cool thanks. It's a pity is doesn't go up past 250k. I was wondering if there was a sudden drop in the exponential curve due to tax exiles (i.e. where there is a shift from the government having a monopoly to having to compete on the international stage).

Anyway, there are around 8000 people earning more than EUR 250k in the country. This is making the government at least EUR 820 million per year.

Do you think if there was a 250k+ (or maybe 200k+) tax band created at the corporate tax rate that it would boost or reduce the total tax take of the government ? It could be sold using the same argument as used for the corporate rate, to enable transfer taxes (or more to the point to attract tax exiles).
