Disability Allowances SLASHED. Please tell your TD this CANNOT be allowed to happen.

In my opinion, this is just wrong; and all at the hands of a Labour minister. What sort of a republic is it that allows payments to the disabled to be cut by up to 47%, and at the same time hands over billions to reckless gamblers, and continues to pay big pensions to people in the full of their health?

I'm not much of a fan of the Joe Duffy show, but I for one hope that he takes up this scandal today.

Are any p.ier's willing to e-mail or call government TDs in an attempt to reverse what I believe is a disgusting cut?

This isn't the best constructed of OPs, but I am just livid at this.

Time to stand up for those who, in some cases, literally cannot even stand.

    From breakingNEWS.ie:

Disability allowance has been slashed from €188 to €100 for 18 to 21-year-olds and from €188 to €144 for 22 to 24-year-olds.

John Dolan, chief executive of the Disability Federation of Ireland, said the reductions “came totally out of the blue” and will stop young disabled people who are already struggling to meet a high cost of living from going out.

“Any effort or intent they would have to participate in their local community, to get out and about, all of that will go,” he said.

“This will actually drive people back into their homes and into exclusion. It will lock people up inside their own doors.”

Rates for 18 to 21-year-olds cared for by a qualified adult will also be cut from €312.80 to €200, and from €312.80 to €268.80 for 22 to 24-year-olds. Benefits will remain unchanged for those over 25.

I thought that the reductions in JA last year didn't apply to anybody who was an existent claimant. It only applied to new claims. Are they applying this reduction in rates to existing DA claims?

It doesn't matter either way damus. To make cuts like this on those who cannot work through disability is disgusting!

There are no indications in any of the news reports I have seen or heard that indicates this is for new claimants.

Gilmore was on Morning Ireland this morning attempting to justify it, and was spinning the line that the changes would align disability allowance rates with the jobseekers’ allowance payments.

How do these revised rates compare to similar payments in the UK?

Tut, tut. Don't you realise that only emotive statements are allowed?

Why should disability payments be higher than jobseekers allowance?

statsman, don't be an ar$ehole; you're better than that. It doesn't matter a damn what the disability payment in the UK is. Do you think we're going to get some disabled welfare tourism, or that people are going to start disabling their kids so they can get more from the welfare?

Which statements have you found emotive*?

*Other than the Nazi one which someone else made!
