For that level of spending-even greater than Sweden's and Germany's-Ireland should be an advanced welfare state, with excellent services in health care, public transport, public housing, schools etc.

The basic statistics can be found in the detailed CSO National Income and Expenditure accounts for 2009,showing total government spending including transfers (but excluding redemption of securities) at €75 billion. That is a ratio of 56% of Gross National Income at then current market prices of €133 billion. Figures for 2010 will be available in August, which should show a small change in the ratio.

The NIE figures above cover government spending more comprehensively than the government Exchequer budget and they are based largely on accrual accounting as opposed to the typical cash accounting of Finance's budget.

For a detailed statistical discussion of how Ireland's spending compares with other EU countries, see Economic Incentives: A High-Spend Economy? Note that Ireland's GDP figure overstates Ireland's national income because of multinational financial transfers.

I admit I'm eating my heart out with jealousy! Your public sector pay was 45% higher than the private sector's in the most recent quarter reported. With benchmarking, your PS wages and pensions rose by an extra 4 percentage points of the national income, between 2004 and 2009,an extra €6 billion a year, equivalent to a€6,000 tax year after year on the average Irish family of four. And this new honest government says it wants to maintain that gain, but what do you think will happen when the government runs out of money early in 2012?

Pat. Don't be bitter because I'm better.

When the government runs out of money in 2012 I'll take my two degrees, masters, and diploma and seek work in the private sector. If that doesn't work I'll emigrate. It's no big deal little man. Those who can do. Those who can't, start anti PS posts on P.ie.

Probably ISME or IBEC. Different place same topic at the same time every day as most of PatS anti PS rants begin in the early hours of the morning.

Is he a night time worker using P.ie?

He refuses to recognise the separate cuts that public sector workers have taken and the additional cuts taken with the rest of the working force.
