I agree to an extent. Minimum wage jobs for a full week (37.5 hours) should be at least twice the Jobseekers Allowance (i.e max JA of €162).

We pay enough in Children's Allowance and dependent adult allowances.

Where household income is above €30,000 only Jobseekers Benefit should be paid, not Jobseekers Allowance.

Well thank you!! I've been saying this for the past 18 months and hearing only an echo. You have child allowance, Lone Parents payments, rent allowance Widows pension - seriously - why work? You can stay at home and get more money than someone slogging away in a factory job.

They do IMO, but then again, I could sit at home on €11K a year burping the baby and watching TV, or I could get a part time job giving me the same amount and go to college, getting a grant, free childcare and and education allowing the opportunity to increase the €11k to €40k+

The long term unemployed should have to do SOMETHING to get JA.

That's the problem - number on Dole is increasing - if Dole rate stays the same then bill goes ++++

Though we need to look at the other allowances, especially the children's , also.

Ludwig von Mises' thoughts on this:

An alternative way in which the government may coerce unemployment is to subsidize that unemployment by paying workers to the extent that they are unemployed. This can occur either as direct government payments to the unemployed (often tax-exempt and thereby higher in after-tax terms) or as welfare payments. In either case, the net psychic return from employment over leisure is sharply reduced by such a subsidy, and the incentive to accept the proffered market wage is reduced by the same extent. Mises perceptively refers to such unemployment as "institutional" unemployment.

    NO!!! THEY ******************************G DON'T!

If the system was that you get 80% of your previous income for as long as you like then yes, it might# but when your income drops by two thirds* you don't think "YEY! now I don't have to work".

Nobody likes being unemployed, I know, I am at the moment, granted I'm a student and I normally have stuff to do during the day in term, but this is the first holiday season (which is over a month for me unlike people outside college with jobs) since I started working where I've had no job, and I can tell you the novelty wears off pretty damm fast, it's mind numbingly boring, theres no point in having all that free time when you've no money and everyone else is working during most of the time you have free, it's soul destroying and depressing sitting on your ass most of the day, NOBODY, other than professional scumbags, enjoys just hanging around all day.
I can, from my perspective, only imagine how much worse it would be if I was previously laid off from full time career I liked, I'm so glad this boredom ends for me in a week, I doubt there are many who would endure it for months or years by choice.

Ahh the politics.ie myth of the wonderful Irish welfare state, have you ever actually tried applying for any of those?, and I love how posters here always stick them all together and add up the diffrent rates, as if there are so many windowed lone parents with 6 kids out there

*and thats just for people on the average industrial wage the drop is steeper for those making more than that.

    # for those that would not die of boredom with nothing to do all day

Agreed, get those who are qualified to work part time in positions that are stretched. I know teachers who are unemployed and yet the schools require teachers...

Here they come, the little fascists wth their well worn "lets get the poor" slogan. Wy not get the obscenely rich boyos who got away with billions of tax payments, or the politicians who lined their pockets with our tax money. Why don't we stop payimg huge pensions to crooked retired and non retired ministers?

And you and your ilk can go forth and multiply, and leave the poor with what little they have. Moron!

No I havent applied for these benifits - I work therefore I pay for them. I know a 40 year old widow who is collecting the Widows pension - why cant she find a job? (She has been widowed for 6 years now - get over it). I know a women who has a 10 year old and has been collecting for the past 10 years - I have a kid and work - I dont need the handout and my kid hasnt robbed a bank or beat an old lady up. As far as this Child allowance craic - use the money to clean up the hospitals - the government should make anyone who wants to collect payments go do xhours of volunteer work.

This would never ever be accepted and would seriously ruin whatever government who tries to put it in....pick on the people who don't do anything all day! That would mess you up!
