So long as its confined to Tipperary South?

It should be considered and analysed along with all other possible solutions. But wasn't there something in the Indo the other day about oil reserves found under Roscommon and surrounding co's?

Moving this to economy as it's an energy issue, but I would just say that there have been at least ten threads on it since I joined, two or three of which are quite good already

Yes to nuclear power.Isn't it about time Ireland caught up with the rest of Europe who use it safely...let the French manage the whole Project though..'Port Tunnel' just to remind people if WE manage it.!!

If it works out cheaper than current energy costs then yes

Well it won't. it can't. Think about it - the Irish would have to set up a nuclear industry from scratch. Even Britain - which has had nuclear for years has to subsidise it (Britain set up nuclear for weapons).Originally Posted by L'Chaim

Is it true that supplies of uranium are running out? (Not just in the sense that it's a finite resource, I mean in a more immediate sense.)

Well the argument is that if all fossil fuel was replaced with nuclear the amount of usable(energy positive) fuel would run out in a few years(less then 5 I think) even with breeder reactors. I think I read also that it would run out in about 70 years on a site that was anti-nuclear but no-one provided me with an unbiased or even pro-nuclear refuting which I asked for when someone pointed out the site was biased on an earlier nuclear thread.Originally Posted by Pidge
It also pointed out that nuclear power does produce GHGs because of the building the buildings, then decommisioning, the transport of the uranium, and the mining. The site said it was 1/3 of the amount produced by gas.
And it said that no nuclear waste has been disposed of properly yet and it's all in temporary storage. It also said if you combine the cost of all of the above nuclear is the dearest form of electricty generation.
If anyone can refute (or correct) what I've said please do!
