Civil Servants can be sacked in the exact same way as anyone in the Private Sector can be.

That rule has completely changed over the last few years.
Any figures on public sector sackings v private sector sackings, because all my crap teachers still seem to be around! If this is true, it is a positive development.

Private sector workers aren't paid by the taxpayer, so beyond worries about inflation and Ireland's cost competitiveness, its really none of my business what private companies choose to pay their employees
Of course it is, increased wages = increased prices for goods and services thus decreasing competitiveness.

I think it is most people's concern. Rising productivity and economic growth can lead to increased government revenue and hence more money for efficient organizations such as the HSE and the Department of the Environment-.

None mate but the rules changed... it used to be that a Minister had to fire a Civil Servant now it's just the Sec Gen of a Dept (the leader).

I've heard of a good few being sacked in recent times and loads of new recruits who are only on contract for their first year are being let go after their year is up.

Yeah, good. That's progress. I am more pro-public service than some would think. As a firm believer in the power of the state, I would naturally want the best from the public service.

I work in Revenue and before that I worked for the Dept of Agriculture and a lot of people have been sacked over the last few years... Its not like years ago when you practically had to kill sombody before you would be fired.

Nowadays you can be sacked for the same type of things as in the public sector... poor attendance, not working up to your target as set by your role profile etc...

That's only changed in the last couple of years - I also think that the Minister might have had to have had the backing (and agreement) of the Cabinet as well!!!
