How did the political elite ever buy into 80000 houses a year being built as a viable and sustainable economic policy?

And why would anyone commit to buying a house in the current crisis?

There's still an awful lot of people, particularly PS and semi-states (without wanting to restart that discussion) who think their jobs are secure and the recession won't happen to them.

I thought that Lenihan was awaiting the commissioners response?

RTÉ News: No Anglo proposal with Almunia, says MEP
Europe's Competition Commissioner has no proposal from the Government on the future of Anglo Irish Bank, according to Labour MEP Alan Kelly.

He was speaking following a meting with Joaquín Almunia in Strasbourg this afternoon.

The Labour MEP said he was surprised that at this stage Commissioner Almunia had nothing to authorise or adjudicate on.

I see Honohan is now being touted as a world expert. I thought Seannie was the leading expert on banking. Or is that Michael demigod Somers?

On Wednesday, September 29th the Dáil reconvenes - we must take to the streets en masse to DEMAND this Anglo carry-on stops.
Two million French were on their streets today to march against an increase in the retirement age. What is happening in this state is much, much more serious. Get out and register your protest - if nothing else than to look your grandchildren in the eye and say you opposed THE CRIME OF THE CENTURY that is the Anglo bail-out.

Taoiseach must reconvene Dáil immediately ? Ó Caoláin | Sinn Féin

"Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has today called on the Taoiseach to reconvene the Dáil immediately to address the banking crisis and the need for an effective strategy to tackle the jobs crisis.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan need to disclose to the Dáil and the public all that occurred at the time of their decision to agree the bank guarantee in September 2008. He said they need to explain why the information they had in their possession regarding the truly catastrophic state of Anglo Irish Bank was not given to the opposition parties at the time of the guarantee."

"The premium that Ireland has to pay over Germany to borrow from investors in the bond market has hit its highest level since the euro was created in 1999"
The Wall Street Journal could take a look at the horrific deficit in its own backyard. Very soon America will be unable to borrow. The Yanks wish to crash the Euro.
Now I accept that our position is perilous and frightening but there are some media elements with their own agendas fanning the flames.
The government has little time to avert disaster. It had better sort out the Anglo situation withn the next few days. Time is running out.

Oh for fecks sake the SF TDs also voted to bail them out on the night.

This is about trying to hide their embarrassment at their own gullability in falling for the word of a FF Minister & Government.

They can wriggle & squirm all they like but they are as culpable as any other TD who voted the same.
