I got the impression that he had in mind a deterrent charge that would move us to use our cards rather than withdrawing cash.

A likely, though unindented, consequence of such a charge would be that many would withdraw the maximum amount they could in one go thus making themselves attractive targets for muggers.

Strange things happen when a government department is run by someone who thinks blasphemy is important.

I got the impression he was thinking of a new way to tax us although he probably should have got the twitter to propose it - then they could say its all the Greens' fault

And according to them it's all the fault of FG and Lab.

    Cassie,
While there may be a grain of truth to that, and I know well of the real prospects of the money supply then being under the control of malevolent forces, with people not being able to get out their own money unless they have the requisite I.D. chip.

Surely though it is also a reasonable proposition that this is an obvious monetary evolution, first we had coins, then paper money, then cheques, then credit cards, then electronic transfer, then internetbanking, debit cards, etc. Fact is for big sums of money we rarely use cash now. The only time I use it is to buy goodies for me kids.

Bottom line, keep a little silver or gold handy, if you have no land join a co-op or get friendly with those relatives or friends who do, just in case those forces do succeed.

This was a new low even for boot boy Ahern. Explain the logic, charging ATM fees to combat Tiger kidnapping ! Next another tax on funerals

    How much?

    That's a genuine question.

It just proves that when you think that Fianna Fail have reached a low in their contempt
for the people you will find that they can go lower,

The lady reviewing the newspapers on the VB show found Ahern's statement baffling as well: "It's like increasing the price of petrol to try to cut road deaths"

(EDIT: then again, if the aim is making Ireland a "cashless society" then it explains everything else...)

Not really. Increasing the price of petrol to cut road deaths might work.

That's baffling given that you would expect such a statement to be used by an opponent of the tax, in order to show up the absurdity of the rationale!
