How about they drop their ridiculously high % charges to small retailers who want to use cards?

Perhaps reduce current account fees, some banks still charge for card TXs on some accounts.

Then, perhaps the Government might consider dropping its annual random charges on card holders...

Then perhaps the banks might consider dropping Laser in favour of a useful card like Visa or MasterCard debit that can actually be used online?

The could also look at rolling out some new technology too e.g. contactless small payment cards e.g. PayWave and also perhaps some better technology for protecting against card fraud.

Then, perhaps we'd higher card usage!

There are problems with the card readers too, my partner worked at a pharmacy recently and the credit card reader went tits up, they phoned the helpline, a call center in UK who eventually told them to ring RBS to order another machine, delivery would be 3 working days, this was on a Saturday so leaving the shop unable to take credit cards until at least Wednesday unless they paid an express fee of £100 for it to arrive 'sometime' Monday, the shop is open 7 days a week.

Dermot Ahern = Worst Minister of Justice ever. Even worse than McDowell. I know I know.

More deaths, more crime, more tiger kidnappings, moral in Garda Siochana at an all time low.

He`ll be writing letters for his constituents again soon

Hasn't the Government been trying to get people to go out and spend money ???

I somehow imagine that a further tax on taking the your money out of a bank that the taxpayer owns, is unlikely to help that 'plan'.

Or does Dermot Ahern just pull policy out of his rectum, on the spot, like the rest of the cabinet ?

This is a stunningly cynical attempt to use robberies as an excuse to hike fees.

Tiger kidnappings are successful because the banks either refuse to operate agreed security protocols or those protocols are inadequate. A simple measure such as a remotely manned cash dispensing system that required simultaneous authorisation by someone at the branch and someone at a separate location in order to dispense large cash amounts would make that crime nigh on impossible.

For the minister for justice to acquiesce in this sort of stroke is a shameful betrayal of his office.

Ahren statements are hilarious. They already charging for starters. Tiger kidnappings are unique to Ireland(?) given the close knitted community (i.e., small country) Instead why dont bank managers Garda come up with panic signal!!

Hows about the Minister for Justice just go & do his job instead. Talk about deflection.

He was talking crap.. as usual.. banks do charge for transactions at ATM's.. check your statement and you will see a charge on it.. also, if you use a "private" cash machine, many of those also charge an extra charge for issuing cash
1,197 people agree with me.. how many agree with you ?

Stunning own goal from a prize nincompoop.

Also, did you see the colour of him, bronzed.
That's a real 1 month in the Med job.
What planet are these idiots on?

Country in ribbons but you use your 1st day back at work after 10 weeks hols To show off your tan and announce as Minister of Justice not that you are going to find these scumbags and jail them for 20 years but to announce a likely further screwing of the public.
They are totally detached from reality at this stage.
