BBC News piece on ghost estates in Ireland

BBC World News (the international BBC News channel) did a piece on ghost estates in Ireland last Friday, it features a ghost estate in County Carlow and interviews with Ciaran Cuffe and David McWilliams. It's worth a look, especially considering that this was displayed to a global audience.

I think I would probably be correct if i said that those the houses in most ghost estates aren't on the market, if they were your car would be twice the value of your house.

I feel sorry for that woman. She seems like just an ordinary person, not one of those obnoxious Robo Paddy types (or whatever the female equivalent). And now she's probably got a huge mortgage for some worthless home in a depressing empty estate. And as she says, there really is no light at the end of the tunnel for her.

And many of the prices being asked for houses currently, even with the reduction over the last few years, reflect the value people need to clear their mortgage, rather than the intrinsic value of the house.

There are houses for sale in estates close to me that are 100k above what would be sensible.

Skirted the issues and 'blame' there a little. I'd like to know whats keeping the prices up too.

If they're selling at that price then it is a sensible price - if they're not selling it's not.

    Thanks for the link David.

Puts a human face to all this. I do feel sorry for the poor woman interviewed.

What continues to bemuse me is why there are so many houses on the market. The woman interviewed rightly seems to say that putting the house on the market is a pointless exercise so why is there such a huge number of houses for sale at prices which McWilliams/ Morgan et al believe still be significantly overvalued? Are those on the market literally desperate to sell or are they just testing the market?
