Irish companies secure over €200 million of contracts for the London Olympics in 2012

Minister O'Keeffe announces €200m in Olympics contracts for Irish firms

Enterprise Ireland help indigenous firms to secure deals and create jobs

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD, today [Tuesday] announced that Irish companies have secured over €200 million worth of contracts for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Irish firms won contracts across a range of sectors including construction, electronics, software, architecture and renewable energy .

Minister O’Keeffe announced the contracts during a visit to Dublin today by a senior delegation from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) organised by Enterprise Ireland.

Enterprise Ireland has been working closely with client companies and the ODA for a number of years to maximise the involvement of Irish firms in the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

This ongoing co-operation has so far led to the award of contracts to Irish companies worth more than €200 million.

The ODA is in Dublin today and tomorrow to meet Enterprise Ireland client companies and discuss the remaining opportunities for Irish firms in preparation for London 2012.

Congratulating the Enterprise Ireland client companies that won contracts, Minister O’Keeffe described the delivery of London 2012 as ‘a significant project that requires the highest levels of innovation, quality and professionalism among providers’.

‘The scale of contracts secured by these companies attests strongly to the excellence of their products and services.

‘The ongoing co-operation between the ODA and Enterprise Ireland has resulted in valuable business opportunities and jobs for Irish firms and their workers.

‘And the impact of the contract wins will have knock-on revenue implications for Irish sub-suppliers.

‘I strongly urge other Irish companies to exploit the opportunity and support available through Enterprise Ireland and the ODA to secure contracts in the next phase of preparation for London 2012,’ said Minister O'Keeffe.

Tomorrow, Enterprise Ireland and the ODA will host a joint seminar for Irish companies across a wide range of sectors.

ODA procurement teams will present on upcoming opportunities and the procurement processes.

The next development phase of the London 2012 involves the fitting-out of buildings and day-to-day running of the Games.

Thousands of contracts remain to be won in areas including security, catering, mobile buildings, waste management and venue fit-out.

The chairman of the ODA, John Armitt, said: ‘Businesses of all types and sizes are helping to deliver the London 2012 Games and many Irish companies have already made the most of the golden business opportunities available.

‘While the bulk of the ODA’s direct contracts have now been awarded, there are still opportunities through the UK-wide supply chain and with the organising committee that will run the Games in 2012.

‘Companies should seize the moment and sign up to www.CompeteFor.com - the free online service enabling businesses to compete for contract opportunities linked to the London 2012 Games and other major public and private sector buying organisations - to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.’

The chief executive of Enterprise Ireland, Frank Ryan, said: ‘Export-led growth is critical to employment and economic growth in Ireland.

‘The scale of the London 2012 project represents a huge opportunity for Irish firms across a number of sectors.

‘The Irish successes to date prove that Irish companies can compete against global competitors and win these prestigious and important contracts.

‘Pursuing the substantial opportunities that are available in the UK at the moment can provide the perfect launch pad for Irish firms seeking export-led growth in overseas markets.

‘We urge clients across all sectors with innovative quality services and solutions to offer to pursue the opportunities that are now presented.’

The successful firms to whom contracts have so far been awarded are:

ABM Precast, Swords, Co Dublin secured work on and around the infrastructure development of the Olympic Park for pre-cast concrete providing a 375 metre tunnel enclosure and a number of other civil pre-cast structures.

Anord Control Systems, Dundalk Co Louth was one of the first Irish companies to win a contract worth over £1m when it secured the package for the supply of switchgear to the site as part of the infrastructural cabling works.

Banagher Concrete, Co Offaly secured the order for pre-cast concrete terracing for the Handball Arena on the Olympic Park. This followed success at stadiums across Ireland including Lansdowne Road.

Clearpower, Co Wicklow has been commissioned to provide the renewable heating equipment for the Olympic Park complex in Stratford, East London. This comprises up to six mega watts of wood chip heating equipment. The installation is being manufactured and will be installed and commissioned during the second half of this year.

Donseed, Co Kerry provides web-based workplace management solutions to the construction, retail and energy sectors. Donseed's solutions enable customers to track real-time attendance, eliminate time leakage, reduce costs by reducing administration, track health and safety compliance, and enable the contract teams to share project information in a secure environment. Donseed's product is being deployed on the Stratford site.

Heneghan Peng Architects, Dublin won the contract to design the Central Park footbridge in the Olympic Park which is being built by Belfast-based Lagan Construction.

John Sisk & Son is the largest Irish-owned contractor in the UK market and the company has won a significant contract award on the construction of the Athletes' Village.

Leinster Reinforcements, Athy, Co Kildare secured the contract for the manufacture and supply of reinforced steel cages for piles to the Aquatic Centre and Handball Arena.

    P. Elliotts secured the main contract for the construction of one of the blocks in the Athletes' Village. This is particularly significant because the company won this prestigious project in their first year of UK trading after only entering the UK market last year. The company has also secured a second major project, in conjunction with Spanish firm FCC, to fit out the 55,000sq/m International Broadcasting Centre.

Techrete, Co Dublin is so far the most successful Enterprise Ireland manufacturing company at the Games with a series of successes in theAthletes' Village for their pre-cast concrete external facades. Techrete invested significantly in technology and lean manufacturing.

Unfortunately, the Olympics is a small part of UK construction which is on its knees at the moment. Things are just not happening in the Water, Nuclear, Rail sectors.

No mention of Ballymore/Mulryan/Fahey am sure I read somewhere they were in for 2bn worth of contracts or maybe they have been put into Nama already.

FF lover Mulryan financed a large part of the London bid already and booked his place at the trough, Nama lads should keep a close eye, if Fahey drops out of the Dail this is where his future lies.
