If they want to hold a protest in the confines of taxi ranks thats fine by me.

However, last time they completely blocked O'Connell St and also blocked the Luas. Those actions inconvenienced tens of thousands of people just trying to go about their lives! I have a problem with that.

When did teachers or guards use their cars to block the streets of our cities?

Yeah he tried to get around the obvious hypocrisy by saying that they should withold their services. Self employed people cannot protest by witholding their services. What kind of protest would that be? Perhaps public servants should protest by refusing to accept their salaries.
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

The Paddy's Day business must have been disappointing. I hope the government stands firm on this. This isn't about levies where an argument may be made either way. This is private business with a high level of competition. Some of them want a middle class 9 to 5 or something equivalent, that's exaggerating but essentially they want less competition. If the taxi drivers want that, they can apply for any of the civil service competitions that come up, or driving a van for the HSE, which might be sweet in comparison. Taxi driving is not work for the man seeking the comfortable life.

The right to protest your conditions of employment was never meant for the self employed.
