A simple solution would be cancel the Taxi permit of any taxi driver who blocks the street. Thus, there will be no protest, and fewer taxis. Everyone would be happy, no?

You're a Labour supporter? Taxi drivers are protesting, which they are entitled to do. Whenever there are marches in Dublin, for most protests, streets are regularly closed off.
Maybe you think they don't have a right to protest?

Once again the taxi drivers are to bring our cities to a standstill in furtherance of their absurd demand for the state to protect them from legitimate competition.

We really need the authorities to stop treating this sort of abuse of the public with kid gloves.

Actions like this need to be outlawed and any driver participating in them should lose his/her licence. In addition the gardaí should be instructed to have a blitz on taxis similar to the blitz on drunk driving at Christmas. Rigid application of the RotR and all laws specific to the industry. PSV licence should be lost after acquiring 6 points.

If they want to protest they can withhold their service. This idea of shutting down the normal business of a city is plain thuggery.
I'm with you on this. They should be bulldozed of the road. Time for the Gardaí to enforce the letter of the law.

They are protesting at their place of work!! Not that I approve mind you, I just love your fuzzy logic!!

At least they are not being "selective" and only picking up fares from people of/supporters of certain political parties etc!!

They have the same rights as anyone else to protest. If they want to hold a march they should do so in accordance with the regulations set out for such protests.

If the protest was organised in the proper way, they have a perfect right. They don't have the right to block public roads without warning.

Taxi drivers are self employed business men. They are not a downtrodden underclass. They are not being mistreated by their employeer. No one forced them to go into business for themselves.

Would it be legitimate for software consultants to block the city streets without warning demanding that the government limit the number of software consultants?

Even most taxi drivers don't support the strikers.
