Should Gardai be exempt from pension levy

GRA seeks pension levy exemption - The Irish Times - Fri, Mar 12, 2010

Might annoy a few other PS unions

We`ve had the private v public
We`ve had the low paid PS v high paid PS
Now could we have PS v PS

I've a lot of sympathy for the Gardi on the pay issue. Rather than annoy the other unions by giving the guards a rise out of line with the rest, the Govt gave the Gardai vastly increased expenses/acclocations/accomodation fees etc as a way of getting around it. Then when the time came for cuts, they were hacked away at, and the govt said "Well we're not cutting your pay really". In addition they don't have the right to strike etc. So you can see why they see themselves as seperate from the other unions.

That being said, this isn't the way to redress that balance, and I would hope the effort fails.

They can retire earlier so presumably they should pay a higher levy

    CAB!!

And the fact that, as this hopeless Government continue to line the pockets of their political friends, and political funders at teh expense of ordinary people, they may be relying upon the Gardai to protect them physically when people finally realise that enough is enough....

At present the Gardai are on the same side as the PS Workers. The Government realise that htey HAVE to get the Guards back on the other side of the barricade, when the additional PS paycuts come in October/November 2010

    Because they cannot strike
I think it is reasonably small price to reward them for that

Yes indeed. Lets hope 12000 Gardaí and 20,000 Army (with reserves) cant cope with the onslaught of the 2 million or so irate Irish people when the sh*t hits the fan.

Did any one force the members of the Gardai to join an organisation that is not allowed to strike? Or to remain members?

This is a bit like joining an non-unionised company and then claiming you should pay a lower rate of tax because your company doesn't want to negotitate with your union of choice.
