raising the retirement age during a recession is ridiculous, no dressing up can alter this fact. 400k out looking for work and they expect the elderly to keep them unemployed. jesus wept

nice one nugget for the thread, really does show the stupidity of some posters who can actually agree with a seriously backward step

It's being raised in stages over the next 20-30 years. Also, people now live longer, and are healthy for longer, while the birth rates continue to fall. Demographically and financially, this is a move that will come in across Europe - the alternative is to increase immigration or accept senior poverty.
Never let the best be the enemy of the good.

Cassandra, this is well off topic as I am as yet unable to send private messages but could you tell me where you read that GF was a 5 times bilderberg attendee? I had a quick look on Wikepedia and found nothing there. Oh and dont worry, I'm not in the CIA or anything .

ibis, people living on hospital trolleys longer don't mean sweet FA, there are lots of alternatives, can u explain why immigration and poverty in your opinion are the only 2 u can think of ?

you are way ott there bud, it is irrelevant whether people are lving longer, just means u should be able to choose the life that suits you after spending the last 40yrs paying taxes.

We don't have the money to pay for somebody to spend the last 20 years of their life not working.

I'd like to see Martin Cullen, on his 100k pension and bad back, being expected to work on until he's 68.

We may be living longer, but our bodies are still aging. It's ok for the dot.com 'smart' economy folk working at their desks, but what about manual labour workers? Builders, teachers, nurses, - how can they continue with a worn out body?

Who are the nameless faces behind the pension companies who are making a killing out of this - who are scamming it the way the developers, bankers, Fas etc have scammed it? How much are they paying our whores in the Dail to enforce this nonsense?

If people don't plan to consume the productive output of others then sure it's irrelevant. If you live on your land and eat your own food then you can live as long as you like.

The difference is when you eat the food produced by others, consume the services produced by others then those people require compensation. You may argue that people "should" be able to retire aged 60 and live as long as they wish however reality does not confirm to the wishes of either you or I.

How do they manage aged 63, 64 and 65? What's so magical about the age 66 they can't possibly be expected to work?
