Because people are living longer, which means the ratio of pensioners to workers is decreasing.

Think of it this way Nugget, by the time you reach 65 years of age you could retire but say you live for another 50 years which is possible given todays breakthroughs in medicine etc. you be claiming a state pension for 50 years.

Why do people need to work untill 68? Do we have a labour shortage in this country or something? Last time I checked we will have 500,000 unemployed by the end of 2010. I can only include that that this is an attempt by the right wingers to glut the labour market even further to drive down wages even further. This government is also attempting to get rid of public state pensions and privatise them all.

I agree it's disgusting. I'm sure we all know people who struggled hard to keep on their feet until they were 66 and could claim the pension. I know my parents did. I'm just hoping when we kick FF into touch we can reverse it. Please put it on the list of things to quiz FG and Labour about on the doorsteps.

You know who is being protected here with this and that is the private pension funds. They get an extra three years of contributions and three years extra deposits. Lots of money for those funds and admin charges. Government friends again.

Germany has also raised the age from 65 to 67.
