Interesting to see how this will work. Many European nations are members of the IMF and contribute money to it. Are they going to withdraw this funding to concentrate on the Euro version?

I would also be interested to know what sort of Conditions may become attached to any loans it issues. The IMF is infamous for its Austerity programs that can cause great hardship to people. I would imagine the EU would at least look for some sort of guarantees from Applicant nations to follow whatever Economic policies issued from Brussels. And losing Economic sovereignty greatly ties the hands of any government in attempting to Improve a nations affairs.

I hate that word, 'austerity', it's a polite term for poverty.

There is a problem is relation to how fast a Union-type IMF could get up and running... by the time they even begin substantive discussions we could well already be seeing multiple sovereign defaults?

I wonder is it the ability to loan money to stricken countries thay are looking to enshrine or is it the ability to interfere in the governing of that country after they have loaned the money that is deemed important?

Well, the latter is the IMF template. Would a European version be much different? And if so, in what way?

It will be no different of course.

The Greek situation has highlighted this fact. The Greeks did not just need money they expected it. But they expected to get the money and carry on as before. Eventually their Govt. listened but the people have not yet shown the same willingness.

The Irish were different. We took the money and eventually, on the third attempt, the instruction.

The EU are now eager to enshrine the acceptance of instruction as a matter of course and not a matter of negotiation.

Sure is! Reich here, Reich now!

Seriously, don't you think that remark is a bit overblown?

Just heard a discussion on this on BBC World Service.

It is expected to be fast tracked and be up and running in June this year.

One of the contributors mentioned that it will require an amendment to the Lisbon Treaty to bring it through......aaaaargh, not again!
