Tags: employment It's a fact that many thousands of man hours are lost to the public service through "sick days" every year whereas the number in the private sector is significantly less and the practice really doesn't exist for the self employed. The reason for the anomaly is simple, in the public sector there's no good reason not to take the day off if your not feeling up to it whereas in the private sector your job could be at stake if you abuse the system and for the self employed it's "no work, no pay"..What I'm proposing is that the government launch a lottery style scheme for public sector workers with significant cash prizes for those who do not take "sick days". Lets say there'd be a draw every month and anyone who did not go sick in that month is automatically entered and someone wins a big tax free sum...I believe that this "reward system" would reduce significantly the amount of lost man hours at a time when we can ill afford them..

Pure shiiite of the highest order
This might have some merit as an idea, the company i work for gives a financial inducement to not have any sick days and arrive to work on time - seems to work as well

That you Hopi? Longtime no see. BTW, a mother can deny access to the unmarried father of her child

If I show you to be wrong, then what have I really achieved? If I convince you that I am right, then what difference does that make? But if I discuss my views and obtain insight from yours & you from mine, then we both learn & our perspectives are more informed.

God almighty, every second proposal is about the dole, getting people to work for less than the minimum wage, etc. FFS.

It's depressing to see so many proposals focus on "getting people involved in their community, volunteering, etc" given the cutbacks in the community development sector at the last budget.

eh no, i am who am, never changed my name, just haven't been on this for a while - check my history if you disbelieve me
also the quote is from michael mcdowell - thought it was well put - very ironic as well seeing he never did anything for single fathers when he was a minister

thats a good idea, a university in the US just went open source, think we should too along with our commons like our maps etc, but of course they would prefer for things to sit on shelf locked away in case someone happens it across for it and pay for it once in a blue moon

This is a "save money" rather than "get the people back to work" idea

I am often asked where I think savings in the PS should come from, if I am not willing to accept yet another slash to my salary. Eh bien....

In government Depts (certainly in education) if a budget is allocated (say a grant to a school for some project) and the person handling that budget is thrifty and gets good value for money, and there is some of that money left over, instead of that school etc being rewarded for their thrift and efficiency in saving the taxpayer money, the next year's budget is cut, as a sort of punishment

For example if the budget allocated is 80,000 and the school/institution brings in the deal at 60,000, thereby saving the Government Dept, and the taxpayer, 20,000, then the next year's budget will be cut by 20,000. So there is no incentive to cut costs. Quite the opposite.

This seems to be a world wide phenomenon in Government spending. The writer PJ O'Rourke commented on it in America. The Tory MP Alan Clarke, noted in his Diaries how shocked he was when he was junior minister for Employment, and later, Defence, in Westminster, to find that saving money meant being punished with less and less budgetry allocation...You have to find ways of spending the money, or you will get less next time.....

It is surely a crazy system, and the root of much waste.......

They should run something along these lines every year for transition year students in school. We need to encourage bright young people to go into business in this country. Say what you want about the U.S. but they are an innovative bunch. Their best students want to go into business. In Ireland our best students want to be doctors, dentists, solicitors or accountants (i.e. service providers no real positive effect on the economy speaking from a pure;y financial point of view. I'm very much aware that docotrs save lifes etc and don't need to be told). While it's obviously up to each individual to find their way in life i believe entrepreneurship and innovation should be celebrated and encouraged.
