Irish Cadbury Jobs at risk from new owners Kraft

They are planning to relocate in Poland.

Food giant Kraft has signalled the loss of up to 400 jobs by announcing the closure of a Cadbury factory - despite earlier promises to keep it open.

The US firm said it was "unrealistic" to reverse Cadbury's plans to shut the site at Somerdale near Bristol and announced that the factory would shut by 2011.

Kraft, whose five-month battle for control of the confectioner was sealed earlier this month, had pledged to retain the plant.

But it said Cadbury had already spent £100 million on building new facilities in Poland and most production would be transferred by the middle of this year.

Union Unite reacted with anger to the decision and said it sent the "worst possible message" to 6,000 other Cadbury workers in the UK and Ireland.

Hope IDA row in behind Cadbury to save these jobs ? They supported the creation of 100 jobs in Dun & Bradstreet over the next 18 months !!!

Cadbury initially announced the closure on 3rd of October 2007.............no chance this was ever going to be rescinded.

Am I alone in thinking that when a large food & ingredients company like Kraft finds itself with a manufacturing foothold in Ireland by means of a merger/acquisition, that we should be going to them to say that now they’re here, these are all the other opportunities for you in Ireland in addition to what you now have with the former Cadbury business. Demonstrating ambition will always impress a lot more than stinking of desperation.

Folks relax. Mary Coughlan is meeting with the Kraft management soon and they will no doubt be so impressed with our minister for enterprise that they will relocate all their operations to Coolock. Just to be sure maybe she could bring Willie 'Wonka' O'Dea just to seal the deal.

Apparantly the Irish Cadbury workers will know their faith in weeks with Kraft to complete a review of its operations in Europe by the begining of May. From the information released it appears that Kraft are implying that there is a oversupply of capacity in the UK between both the existing Kraft and Cadbury operations. With the UK political sensitivities, never mind the costs issues, Ireland could very easily lose out in that squeeze as the point of least resistance.
