It is not a lame idea. It is an imaginative and creative idea. Do not mind the Green loons pontificating about the environment and energy use being ungodly and all that crap. If they had their way and unfortunately they do, we would get what we have. Rising fuel prices and the loss of jobs.

    They are economic retards.

someone asked for a pony, free electricity would create spare capital in business ,the average household bill for the year is around €650 so no great capital for householders.
if industry energy costs are reduced there may be capital for expansion and maybe jobs

But many households are only now receiving their electricity or gas bills -- so how far will the concern of the State and energy suppliers extend?

Are they already printing off extra bundles of those chilling letters warning about disconnection for non-payment?

Except it would be much higher as every company and individual would just stop turning everything off. In a high welfare, high benefits society such as ours, the idea of increasing what people get for nothing is silly.

The taxpayer will still end up paying for it, as well as paying for the extra interest we're charged on the loans we're going to have to get to pay for it.

We've JUST gone through an ordeal trying to remove 4 billion from current expenditure, and you want to add 7 bilion in a gimmick move?

Aside from that it's a great idea.

Let's say the cost was €7bn to pay everyone's electricty bill. Why not just hand everyone the cash? What benefit is the "free" electricity? Would income tax be increased to pay for the measure? Wouldn't the main beneficiaries not be the countries we buy oil/gas/coal from?

Free ponies is a better option. Those without land to graze the ponies could eat them.

there are loads of threads here moaning that energy costs are too high, i make a suggestion that we give everyone free electricity for one year and the suggestion is treated with distain, it stands to sense that a fair usage policy would be in place, anything higher than the previous years bill would be charged, i have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of people in this country now want the country to fail, you cry about stimulus packages i present a simple one and its dismissed,
