They consider it their entitlement. A perk of the job.

Does that mean we're less lazy than the German's with their average of 6 weeks paid leave per year?

This would be reflected in the average wage

And there's no recorded instance of a German getting sick.

It could catch on as way of compensating for losses due to pay cuts?
i.e. "If they are going to pay me 10% less then I will take the worth of it in more sick leave."

I thought statutory was 21 days and above that was discretionary - I do agree that anything above 21 should be based on some effort or attainment of a particular goal by an employee.

Anyone know what the "Sick leave" policy is? Surely there is no "allowable" number of days for "sick leave" by default is there? If there is this will just encourage people to take that number of days in addition to their personal leave.

All sick days should be at your own expense ( unless serious health problems ). We need business to regain competitivness not employees catching up on their sleep & golf

In the company I work for an employee out for more than 3 days (in six months) must produce a doctors cert.

Not too many people take 'sick' days which are just really duvet days here.
