Last year we there was a combined absence of 34 days, largely due to one of our colleagues missing three weeks for an infected appendix. We all work overtime without pay or days in lieu. So I'm tired of all this slagging of the PS.
You are wasting your time and effort in trying to inform some posters of what actually happens. They do not actually want to know that the majority of workers are decent, hardworking people who get on with their colleagues and bosses and take sick-leave only when absolutely necessary. None of my colleagues has taken sick-leave in the past few months. All arrive for work ahead of time and most leave work well after finishing time.

But this is not what people want to believe. Vindictive, jealous, ignorant morons whose only pleasure in life is to indulge in the criticism of others, with their ultimate aim being to reduce others to their own level of misery.

They spend their working day on the net posting vitriol about public sector workers, people who have the audacity to take a day off when sick, and anyone who might have a life more fulfilled than they.

Let them wallow in their own begrudgery and jealousy. On this forum they might be in the majority, but in real life they are a small minority.
I do not know anyone like this in real life.

Nobody is picking on you or your type. The discussion was about people who do take paid sick leave and other matters.
There is no point in contacting your local gov rep cause they just don't want to listen.

A bit of a generalisation there. People ( as in Biffo use of the word people ) who dont abuse sick leave - good. Across the public sector the AVERAGE number of sick days is 12+

The PS up to last year got an hour off every week to "cash their wages cheque" eventhough they get paid directly into their account for the last 10 years or so.

I think the perk might still be there.

    Regain competitivness across the economy.

I have been working in the public service for more than thirty years. I NEVER got time off to cash my wages cheque.

Any more interesting pieces of mis-information to peddle?

Ever thought of becoming a writer? We need some new fairy-tales.

    True.

But you have to remember that the PS includes high-stress jobs in the prison service, nursing and policing. Sick abscence in these areas skeews the average. The office I work in doesn't deal with criminals or sick people and I'd say the average sick leave is two-three days a year. I personally know people who go years without ever taking sick leave and they are public servants.

Having said all that, I'm perplexed to know as to why employees of the PRA are taking such serious levels of leave.
It is nonsense to say that Germans are unable to change. Merkel

There is a lot os stress across all sectors of society. Most people understand that there is opportunity........we all understand that most people are honest. Anyone that takes a sickie whilst not sick is perpretrating a fraud on the employer. Would someone ever shop a colleague. Doubt it. The thread was to try & remove the payment of dishonest sickies

I don't know what all the witching and moaning is about. In a previous life when I worked I managed a team of 8 (all young and single). My team had the lowest sick leave in the company. The reason being that if they went out on the batter they knew that they could ring me the next morning or text that night and say that 'I'VE BEEN OUT ON THE BATTER I WILL BE IN AFTER LUNCH OR NOT IN'. They took the time out of their holidays and that was that. Unfortuneatly, there seems to be a 'the sky is going to fall in' attitude in this country to a sudden days holidays.
Nobody who worked for me had an issue with putting a bit extra into the days work to cover for someone else because when the time came for them to need time off for some 'not life or death situation' there wasn't a problem.

Companies wouldn't have as high a sick leave if there was sufficient staffing levels and no need for 3 months notice for a days leave. Also, if you are sick you shouldn't be in work in the first place. Just because someone isn't on a hospital trolley does not mean they aren't sick. It used to crack me up when someone came into work sick. While okay for the majority, I am an asthmatic, I get the common cold an I could be out of action for 3 weeks.
