Because they are trade unions not political parties.

trade unions act politically all the time! the CNT and UGT in Spain would be the ultimate examples

also if the unions can't see the linkage between money being handed to insolvent banks and money being taken from their workers, then they deserve whatever they get

Even if there was no NAMA, or money put into banks, we'd still be spending 25bn more than we make.

Would unions then agree that cuts to our espenses (i.e. their pay) is required.

We're not talking about Spain. Civil Servants can't engage in political activity like that suggested.

maybe it's time to start? (obviously I'm not advocating armed rebellion by worker's militia!)

Isn't posting here and on other political forums a form a political activity?

ICTU is forever stepping over the line and attempting to dictate general government policy.

Those same people will also organise the roll back on the pay cuts decision. It is already happening in the Irish Times and the Examiner.
I afraid that it has more to do with GE in 2015, rather then next elections
Fianna Fail is killing two birds by one stone
    1) they are creating as much possible difficulties for next government by leaving to them ruined country
    2) public servants will remember more about reversal paycuts, rather then cuts itself and will give their votes to FF in 2015

As against your plan of anointing the PS as royalty and allowing them to spread there largesse amomgst the peasants.Using cash that by its very natutre would be another millstone around the private sector worker. How far are you willing to flog a worker, until they scream for mercy, or to death?

Reduce taxes now for everyone will make the paycuts more palpable.

Why not deal with the substance of the issue rather than trotting out childish nonsense like royalty and flogging?
