Irish R&D funding outperforms EU average

    Smart economy requires smart funding.....

since the FP7 began and up until October 2009 there have been 2,322 applicants for funding from Irish-based organisations.

“From these proposals, 546 applicants were successful, receiving €152 million, giving an overall Irish success rate of 23.51pc, above the European Member State average of 21.68pc
Nice to see we are still good at getting money from external sources - sources which have more stability and will not be reduced by the Government

This can only improve with Marie Geoghegan-Quinn as R&D commissioner.
To live honestly, to hurt no one, to give every one his due.

Her effect, if any, will only be felt in the next FP which is due to start in 2013 - when she is due to be out of office. Also, the EU is not as open to cronyism as Irish politics so I expect, actually hope there will be little or no effect.

im surprised they didnt just give the 1800ish a tenner each.
they could spin this as 100% part-funding rather than just 23.51%.

R+D grant aid has been on the IDA agenda since, at least, the late 80's. The SMART economy is just a new PR slant on a programme that has had marginal success in creating jobs.

Yes, so far I would agree with you - it is over a year since that paper was published and little visible progress has been made. The Innovation Taskforce is due to report this month I think so we'll see how many more reports need to be written before anything it is actually done!

The interesting thing about funding is that we have, as a country, consistently punched above our weight in getting these funds, even after we were deemed to have closed the economic and social gaps, etc. It would be nice to see this skill turned into a more productive one in some way to help ourselves rather than asking for help.
