The 'pogrom' (total casualties: 0) was no worse then the boycott of Protestants in Fethard in the 1970's. The mayor has made it clear that in both cases he was referring to those defrauding the system. Frankly the whole issue is hysterical PC bullsh1t and a total non event.

Do tell us more about those attacks. We should also bear in mind that the "pogrom", however outrageous and regrettable was of its time. Similar anti-Jewish activity was taking place all over Europe while often going uncondemned, as it were, leading in short order to the Balfour declaration which was supported by many eminences who simply wanted to get rid of the Jews. A final solution... if you like.

It is an insult to the Irish people to suggest that they are going to turn into Nazis if discussion on immigration-control takes place. Experience across Europe shows that Political-Correctness actually leads to the rise of the Far Right by preventing myths being disproven and genuine concerns being addressed. In that way, moderates with concerns about immigration end up voting for the Far Right. So the PC-brigade actually increase racism and are largely to blame for the rise of the Far Right. History shows that immigration had nothing to do with the rise of Hitler anyway. Claims to the contrary are a myth spun by the Left since 1945 to smear conservatives and centrist opponents. It is a lie.

Well basically if any person has been seriously injured in a racist attack in the last few years, then it is worse than the 'pogrom' .I believe there have actually been some racially motivated murders in this country since then but I need to check that.
In the pogrom a few morons broke windows and a couple of people got 'beat up' . Im saying in effect that the mayors comments 'in this time' are actually more dangerous than the priests comments that sparked the pogram .

Rubbish. The mayor called for those defrauding social welfare who are not Irish citizens to be deported. He also said those on long term social welfare should contribute work to community improvement schemes. What he did not say was that foreigners cause trouble everywhere they come and should be driven out en masse, which is what the priest said in the pogrom. The priest's comments were far more irresponsible.

They are, and particularly so as the Jewish population would have been numbered in dozens. Unfortunately for all of us Kiely shot his mouth off before engaging his brain. I do wish that courageous public representatives (or those with a death wish) would get their "clarification" in first because otherwise real debate on this critical issue will continue to recede.

Well I dont see why an EU lover such as Kiely should be criticizing basic EU policies in the first place .It only makes sense when seen as pure cynical populism .The same man was singing a very different tune two months ago when Senor Barroso came to town .

Perhaps the first citizen was attempting to reflect the views of many of the ordinary citizens of Limerick, even if it took his belated "clarification" to get it right.
